After getting tired pretty quickly of Taormina, we decided to move to Ortygia: a Beutiful small island connected to Sicily with a large bridge.
The connection is so perfect that Ortygia (Ortigia) doesn’t even look like an island on its own.
Part of Syracuse (Siracusa), Ortygia is one of the most beautiful places in the world considering how amazing is to move around its little streets and how you can breath the sicilian culture at every corner.
We managed to stay at a 5 stars hotel at a discounted price so our experience was really lovely and we enjoyed every single day spent there.
Ortigia can be the perfect place for families considering the large pedestrian area and the friendly streets. However there is no direct access to the sea so I can’t recommend to spend more than 3-4 days to visit the island.
Hotel in Ortygia - Des Etrangers Hotel & SPA
We stayed in the Des Etrangers Hotel for 4 nights and we had a pleasant stay in the first room whilst we had a dump problem in the second room when we extended our stay of one night.
The hotel has great potential but at the same time it looks that the management isn’t able to fullfil the entire potential of the place
Restaurant in Ortygia: La Foglia
The trattoria Mamma Gina trays to recreate a true experience of an Italian trattoria. The waiters were funny in their own way and the Fiorentina Steak was impressively good. So we recommend this restaurant easily.
The house wine is ok.

Playground in Ortygia
Ortygia itselft doesn’t have a playground however when you cross the bridge and get in Syracuse, turn right and few minutes from there you’ll find two big playgrounds.
Some photos of Ortygia. (I believe that the photos don’t give justice to the beautiful old town)
