We left the Campania region and we headed south through the famous Salerno-Reggio Calabria. This motorway is mentioned almost on daily basis by the Italians for many reasons and myths.

The Salerno-Reggio Calabria is the only connection between Campania and Calabria and it is famous as one of the most expensive motorways of the history because any money invested in its restoration disappears in unknown hands.

We stopped in Castrovillari, a small town in the middle of Calabria, that offers really little. Shops and restaurants were closed for the siesta but we were lucky enough to find a local bakery still open and some lovely food hand made for us by the over 80s owners.

After that we moved on to Tropea our destination for 4 days. Tropea is a small old village on the sea. We had a nice stay however I can’t really recommend to stop here for any reason.

Calabria is actually quite abandoned and carries the feeling of a region that is dying little by little. The connection between neighbour villages is horrible, all the buildings are ruined and uncompleted, the young generations have left for other parts of Italy or Europe.

Hotel in Tropea - Valemare

We stayed in the hotel Valemare in Tropea and we had a pleasant stay. This isn’t a 5 stars resort (or even 4) and the rooms are quite small. The hotel offers a direct access to the beach through a good hundred of steps so it isn’t definitely families friendly or for the elderly.

The best part of the hotel was the food. The breakfast was good with some local specialities and the dinner was a real bargain for 18 euros (pasta, main, dessert, wine, coffee, etc.) The only downside of the restaurant was the wine: undrinkable.

The rooms with balconies and sea views are the best (of course).

Families tips:

The rooms are quite small and the hotel doesn’t offer any facility for children. For a family with more than 1 child I won’t recommend this hotel at all.

My opinion about the Hotel:

Score 67 Points

Restaurant in Tropea:

Tropea offers good restaurants and places where to eat out.

We had lunch in a Local place on the beach and we tried the famous Onions from Tropea. (super sweet). From all the places that we have been in Italy, Tropea is definitely the one that offers the better value for quality. (the prices are really cheap)

Tropea: the Calabria's coast with its beaches and beauties
Tropea isn't for families. Rocks Beaches, the old town is uphill, a lot of steps.
